Brooder Box How To - under $30 PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 October 2008 13:29

Here is a chick brooder box I made today in about 15 minutes. I used a 100 litre plastic crate on wheels $18.99 on special at Crazy Clarks. I also bought a $10 lamp from Crazy Clarks to use the light fitting to attach to the side ( of course I got an electrician neighbour to do that part of it, it's illegal to attempt any electrical wiring yourself ). Total cost $28.99 plus the cost of the 40w light globe. Sharon, ChookNet Admin

If you have made anything useful for your chooks or poultry we would love to hear about it! See the ChookWise Handy Hints page for how to submit your own handy hint. If you include a photo, you might even have your hint featured right here on the front page!

A wire mesh cover using left over mesh or chicken wire to replace the plastic lid ensures adequate ventilation. If nights are cold you can part-cover the mesh lid with an old towel to avoid heat loss.

The great thing about the plastic box - it keeps the chickies nice and warm, it's so easy to clean, and is very re-usable! I now have three in a row with little chicks in them and I call it the "nursery".

Do the currently available light globes (now that you cant buy incandescents) still work in these type systems? Was unsure if the newer energy efficient ones still put out enough heat?
